Texas Mission of Mercy Gives Back

Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) embarked on its 90th mission to make a difference in people’s lives by staging an event on February 23rd and 24th 2024 in Lumberton, Texas.

The mobile dental clinic’s mission is to provide the uninsured and underserved in Texas communities with free dental care to restore smiles, alleviate pain and transform patients’ lives.  More than 500 dedicated volunteers including a network of local dentists, prosthodontists, endodontists, dedicated community leaders and generous sponsors gathered for the 2-day event, providing $600,000 of free dental care to 501 patients.

A major initiative for this and future events was spearheaded by Dallas dentist Dr. Michael Rainwater in partnership with local prosthodontists and dental laboratories to increase the number of full and partial removable dentures delivered to patients attending TMOM events. Dr. Eva Boldridge, a Houston prosthodontist, who has adopted the Ivotion digital denture workflow in her practice, was at the forefront of the effort. Using the latest intraoral scanning technology, patients’ upper and lower arches were scanned at a pre-screening appointment 2 to 3 weeks prior to the event and photos taken of the patient with a mush bite registration record using the Ivoclar Centric tray. The digital files along with the centric bite tray and photos were sent to Pro Dental Lab, Weslaco, TX for design and manufacture of an Ivoclar IvoBase denture prosthetic to be delivered at the day of the February TMOM event.

“This was the first time digital technology was used in the delivery of a conventional final prosthetic at one of these events,” said Dr. Boldridge. “The dentists who delivered the final denture to patients were amazed at the how well they fit.” Providing patients with a transformative high-quality full or single arch prosthetic with the fit and esthetics that mimic natural teeth was rewarded by the patients’ new smiles and gratitude.

"This was a very fun and rewarding project to be involved in," said Ivoclar technical consultant Kene Miller.  "Making people smile is what we do."
